Poliquit, Jr. died at 30

Well-known in the marathon world especially in the Philippines scene, Rafael Poliquit, Jr., popularly known as the “Marathon King,” passed away last Thursday, 30 April 2019, at the age of 30.

Mary Joy Tabal, another famous marathoner in the female league, announced it on her Facebook page. 

Rafael Poliquit, Jr. died due to complications from subdural empyema in meningitis. He was at the AFP General Hospital (or V. Luna General Hospital) when he passed away.

“You will always be in our HEARTS POL! May you rest in peace! Gone too soon!” Tabal posted. “Let’s bring this SMILE to HEAVEN Pol and continue to RUN your ETERNAL MARATHON. You will always be MY MARATHON KING, OUR MARATHON KING. YOU will be in our hearts! REST IN PEACE Master Endurance!”

Rafael Poliquit, Jr. was born in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, on 27 January 1989 and popular for winning three Milo Marathons in 2014, 2015, and more recently last 2018, which earned him a spot at the SEA Games. He was supposed to join this year’s Southeast Asian Games marathon event. He joined his last marathon at the Davao International Marathon held in Davao City last 10 March 2019.

He also served in the military with the rank of Airman 2nd Class and also had his share of short distance run including the 10,000 meters during the 2012 Asean University Games in Laos.
